The Institute of Sociology was established in 1990 as an independent, non-governmental and non-profit research organization operating within the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The Institute is a member of:
International Political Science Association (IPSA)
European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)
European Consortium for Social Research (ECSR)
International Social Survey Program (ISSP)

Member of EU since 2004

   

The Institute participates in multinational and international research projects, organizes international scientific meetings and is involved in the exchange of scientific information.

The Institute carries out fundamental and applied social science research. It has established close links with Czech universities and contributes to the training of their students. Research is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of social change in Czech society, in particular with regard to its post-communist transformation.

The examination of social change is focused on the following dimensions of this process:
1. Transformation of the political system
2. Social aspects of the economic transformation
3. Labor market
4. Transformation of the social structure and modernization
5. Changes in social stratification
6. The status of women and families in society
7. Social aspects of demographic processes
8. Community research, local politics and regional problems
9. Social problems of the border regions
